Kilian Jornet Burgada and Laetitia Roux won the first World Cup race.
The Vertical race was staged in Andorra; the Individual race is to be held tomorrow.

This morning in Andorra the first World Cup race took place; as expected, the race was dominated by the Spaniard Kilian Jornet Burgada and the French Laetitia Roux.

Two Italian athletes, Lorenzo Holzeknecht and Manfred Reichegger, completed the men’s podium. As regards the women, Mireia Mirò Varela finished second, followed by the Italian Gloriana Pellissier.

The start for the men’s race was at 10 while the men race started half an hour later. According to ISMF regulations the women started at higher altitude on a race whose difference in altitude amounted to 580 metres.

The men’s racecourse has a positive difference in altitude by 950 metres. Right after the start the French Laetitia Roux takes the lead before the Spaniard Mirò Varela and the Italian Pellissier; for both Mirò Varela and Pellissier the leader’s pace is way too much to endure, so both contenders continue on their own pace and leave Roux to a sure win. The race ends in the blink of an eye, the winner crosses the finish line in 25.22, Mirò Varela end a minute and three seconds later, while the Italian loses 28 seconds to the runner-up.
As regards the men’s race, the challenge followed the same evolution as its feminine equivalent, even though Kilian Jornet Burgada could not quite lead the contenders as dominatingly as Roux did. Next to Lorenzo Holzeknecht there is another Italian, Michele Boscacci. Boscacci, after about a difference in altitude of 400 metres makes room for Holzeknecht to let him lead the pace, while the French Yannik Buffet draws closer and closer until inadvertently hits the front binding of Boscacci’s ski with his pole.

The Italian athlete keeps racing though having one loose binding causes him problems and it is not after long that on a harder stretch, the ski snaps loose and starts sliding backwards.
Boscacci quits the race for the podium and goes back in pursuit of his lost ski. Buffet passes him as well as Manfred Reichegger. Back on both skis, Boscacci tries to catch up by racing at maximum speed but in such a short race the feat proves impossible.
Reichegger pulls ahead of Buffet and gets on the tail of the Swiss Martin Anthamatten.
At the finish line the table does not change: Kilian Jornet Burgada ends at 35.17, Holzeknecht confirms his second place with 36.01, while Manfred Reichegger completes the podium with 36.15.
Tomorrow the individual race is to be held in Arcalìs, 1700 metres in altitude to be completed in five sloping stretches, both the women and men will compete on a shorter racecourse.
