Kilian Jornet: “Sono stato tascinato giù per 50 metri circa… Ero dubbioso se continuare o ritirarmi e ho deciso per la seconda opzione”
Kilian Jornet, ha rischiato grosso sull’Everest, durante il tentativo lanciato sulla Cresta Ovest aperta da Tom Hornbein e Willi Unsoloed nel 1963. Fortunatamente l’atleta sta bene ed è gia rientrato al Campo Base.
Malgrado questa brutta esperienza, Kilian si dice soddisfatto: “Tutto è stato più che perfetto, tranne che non ho raggiunto la vetta”.
Al ritorno dalla valle del Khumbu, Kilian ha raccontato così la sua salita:
“Nel 1963 il defunto Tom Hornbein e Willi Unsoloed fecero la prima salita di questa bellissima via. È stato un piacere seguire le loro orme per un po’. La mia salita è iniziata con la scalata di un ripido couloir per raggiungere la spalla ovest; le condizioni erano orribili, sotto ghiaccio blu, con uno strato superiore di neve profonda, due passi verso l’alto e uno verso il basso per 1000m! Quando ho raggiunto la cresta c’era molto vento quindi sono rimasto 3 ore sotto una cornice in attesa, guardando le code di scalatori nepalesi e tibetani che progredivano. Quando il vento si è calmato, ho proseguito su terreno misto fino alla base del couloir Hornbein. Mi sentivo benissimo e le condizioni erano perfette…”
Peccato che dopo un centinaio di metri, sul couloir si sia innescata una valanga che ha trascinato l’atleta per circa 50 metri. “Ero dubbioso se continuare o ritirarmi e ho deciso per la seconda opzione”, ammette Kilian.
La discesa è avvenuta sotto una fitta nevicata. Le tracce precedenti erano completamente sepolte e la visibilità era di due o tre metri. “È stato “interessante”, ha affermato Kilian, che è rientrato sano e salvo al Campo Base, senza aver raggiunto la vetta ma, comunque, soddisfatto, dopo quella che ha definito “una grande giornata in montagna”.
“Credo molto che il ‘come’ sia molto più importante del ‘cosa’, e in questo senso la salita è stata semplicemente perfetta – ha commentato Jornet – Come un grande puzzle, con tutti i pezzi tranne uno, quello in vetta.”

I didn’t reach the summit I was aiming for. But everything else.I’m a big believer in the how is way bigger and more important than the what, and in that sense the climb was just perfect. Like a big puzzle with all the pieces but one, the summit one.
In 1963 the late Tom Hornbein and Willi Onsoloed made a first ascent of this beautiful route. It was a pleasure to follow their footsteps for a little. My climb started climbing a steep couloir to reach the west shoulder, the conditions there were horrible, blue ice underneath with a top layer of deep snow, 2 steps up and one down for 1000m! When I reached the ridge it was very windy so I stayed under a cornice for 3h to calm down while enjoying watching the queues of climbers from both nepali and tibetan normal routes making their progression. After the wind calmed I continued the ridge and traversed on mixed terrain towards the feet of the Hornbein couloir. I felt great and conditions were perfect. After a few hundred meters on the couloir a wind pocket (I suppose recently created from the morning winds) broke and I got carried down in the avalanche for about 50m. I doubted whether to continue or to turn around and decided the latter. The downhill was interesting, with heavy snowfall that made me use the @corosglobal “back to start” feature following my way up, since visibility was 2-3m and my tracks were under deep snow.
Well, a great day in the mountains, where everything was beyond perfect except I didn’t reach the summit.
